Unmissable Views and Hikes
Wentworth Falls
For a breathtaking view of the region, head to Wentworth Falls. You’ll get a stunning view of this natural park just a few hundred meters from the parking lot at the Wentworth Falls Lookout. Then, take the Wentworth Falls Track to admire impressive waterfalls along the way.
Evans Lookout and the Grand Canyon Walking Track
Another lookout you can’t miss is Evans Lookout, located in Blackheath, offering a panoramic view of the vast Blue Mountains in a stunning setting. From here, you can also start the Grand Canyon Walking Track, where you’ll experience the famous Grand Canyon. This 4-hour hike spans 6 kilometers, taking you to the base of waterfalls surrounded by incredible greenery. You can also drive from Evans Lookout to Govetts Leap for another view of the magnificent cliffs from a different perspective.
Katoomba
Three Sisters, a Breathtaking View of the Legend
However, the most spectacular view remains that of the Three Sisters in Katoomba, which we highly recommend, especially at sunset. This location holds special significance for the Aboriginal community. According to legend, three sisters named Meehni, Wimlah, and Gunnedoo once lived with the Gundungurra people in the Jamison Valley. They fell in love with three brothers from the neighboring Dharruk tribe, but tribal law forbade their marriage. The brothers, being skilled warriors, tried to abduct the sisters by force. To protect them, a wise elder from the tribe turned the women into stone until the battle was over. Unfortunately, the elder was killed during the battle and could not transform them back into women. The magical story and the beauty of the place will make you fall in love too!
Scenic World, an Extraordinary Experience
Katoomba is also a must-visit spot as it is home to the famous Scenic World. Scenic World features a cable car with transparent walls, offering panoramic views of the Blue Mountains, as well as the world’s steepest railway that descends into the Jurassic rainforest for an incredible spectacle. The escarpment is over 310 meters high and has a 52-degree incline, making for an unforgettable experience! You will also find numerous hiking trailheads to explore the tropical rainforest in the Jamison Valley.
Charming Towns in the Region
In the Blue Mountains region, you’ll also have the opportunity to stop by a few charming towns.
Lawson, a Great Place to Live
The town of Lawson is a strategic point close to the Blue Mountains, where you can shop in its many boutiques or enjoy the town’s Olympic swimming pool. It is also home to North Lawson Park, where you’ll find Fairy Falls, St. Michaels Falls, and many other beautiful spots.
Glenbrook and the Wonders of Its National Park
We also recommend the town of Glenbrook, where many guided tours stop to grab a bite or enjoy a good coffee at one of the town’s establishments. Here, you’ll find the famous Lennox Bridge, built by 20 convicts in 1832, making it the oldest stone bridge in mainland Australia.
It’s also the entrance point to Glenbrook National Park. This park is dotted with lovely swimming spots in a picturesque setting, such as Jelly Bean Pool and the famous Blue Pool. Euroka Clearing is the area of the park where you might be lucky enough to spot kangaroos. Just nearby, you can also observe Aboriginal artwork at the Red Hand Caves from a viewing platform. You can also admire the Glenbrook Gorge and even learn to abseil on its southern side at Mount Portal.
Leura: Between Waterfalls and Chocolate
The village of Leura is another must-visit destination where you can enjoy artisan shops, art galleries, and discover the delicious creations of Josophan’s Fine Chocolates. While in the area, make sure to visit the stunning 30-meter waterfall, Leura Falls. Located on the Leura Falls Creek, downstream from Leura Cascades and Bridal Veil Falls, it’s just a 10-minute drive from Katoomba. To learn more about the region’s history through art, be sure to visit the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre or take a stroll along the Street Art Walk to connect with local artists on the streets.
