Experience Wildlife Like Nowhere Else on Earth

At Bonorong Sanctuary, you’ll enter a world that’s home to some of Tasmania’s rarest animals. Located on the island’s southern edge, Bonorong is more than just a sanctuary—it’s the last refuge for creatures found nowhere else. Here, Tasmania’s most unique animals, including the famous Tasmanian devils, thrive in a safe and natural environment. This experience is as educational as it is inspiring, giving you a chance to learn about these remarkable creatures and how the sanctuary is helping protect them.

Get Up Close with Unique Tasmanian Wildlife

Want to meet a Tasmanian devil or spot an elusive eastern barred bandicoot? You’re in the right place! Bonorong is home to animals like quolls, emus, and native birds that’ll make you feel like you’ve stepped into a whole new world. Our passionate guides will share fascinating tales of each animal’s journey and survival. By visiting, you’re not just getting an up-close encounter; you’re actively supporting Tasmania’s wildlife!

Join the 24/7 Rescue Mission

Bonorong isn’t just a sanctuary—it’s the heart of Tasmania’s largest Wildlife Rescue Service. With a crew of volunteers ready to save animals in distress, Bonorong rescues everything from injured possums to orphaned wallabies. And guess what? Every single rescue is funded by you. Just by walking through our gates, you’re helping bring animals back to health and, whenever possible, back to the wild.

A Fun & Feel-Good Experience

Forget what you know about zoos—Bonorong is about helping animals get back on their feet (or wings, or flippers)! You’ll learn all about Tasmania’s incredible wildlife and how Bonorong’s work is preserving this island’s precious ecosystem. With our Wildlife Hospital and conservation programs, we’re working every day to make sure these animals thrive. And the best part? You get to be part of the mission!

Know Before You Go

What should I bring?

Prepare for all types of weather as you explore the beautiful Bonorong Sanctuary—Tasmania’s island climate can shift from sunny skies to showers in a matter of minutes! To make the most of your day with us, we recommend bringing a few essentials:

  • A hat and sunscreen (especially in the summer months)
  • Comfortable clothing and flat footwear for easy walking,
  • Sunglasses
  • A camera or smartphone
  • A reusable water bottle

Come prepared, and make your visit to Bonorong an enjoyable and memorable one! Book your entry today, and get ready to meet Tasmania’s incredible wildlife up close.

What is NOT included?

Don’t worry about a thing! Bring along some extra snacks to keep your energy up throughout the day. Also, consider bringing  credit card or cash for drinks or souvenirs.

What else should I know before I go?

We offer a variety of payment options, including cash, EFTPOS, and credit/debit cards, though please note there are no ATM or cash-out facilities on-site. Entry is free for children under 3, and most guests can comfortably explore the Sanctuary within an hour. If you’d like to join a public tour, please plan for an additional 30 minutes.

For the well-being of our animals, holding or cuddling is not permitted. However, on premium tours or private encounters, you may have the opportunity to gently pat certain animals, always at their discretion. All guests will receive a complimentary bag of kangaroo food upon entry. Our friendly Forester Kangaroos love a gentle scratch on the chest and are happy to feed from your hand! Please remember, though, not to share other human food with our wildlife as it can harm them.

Our gift shop features a variety of Tasmanian products and wildlife-themed gifts, as well as plant-based snacks, cold drinks, and ice cream. Food for the kangaroos is also available here. Additionally, the Bonorong Food Hut serves 100% plant-based meals and is open daily from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. You’re welcome to bring your own food or picnic, with plenty of picnic tables around the Sanctuary and a BBQ area available for bookings.

Currently, public transportation isn’t available directly to the Sanctuary, but taxis are a convenient option. While Ubers are available in the Hobart CBD, we recommend scheduling a pickup if you plan to use one, as they may not be as readily available for your return trip.
